Integration with Undergraduate Studies

The Federal University of Espírito Santo (UFES) offers undergraduate courses in Mathematics across three campuses: Goiabeiras (bachelor's and teaching degrees, in Vitória), São Mateus (north of the state, also bachelor's and teaching degrees), and Alegre (south of the state, only teaching degree). The Federal Institute of Espírito Santo (IFES) also offers a teaching degree in Mathematics in Vitória. These courses have produced a significant number of excellent students who have continued their studies in the best postgraduate programs in Mathematics and related areas in the country. The UFES Graduate Program in Mathematics (PPGMAT) is the only academic postgraduate program in Mathematics in the state.

PPGMAT closely collaborates with undergraduate students at UFES, especially those in Mathematics, in various ways. The program's faculty members, in addition to teaching regular undergraduate courses, as per Article 51 of the General Postgraduate Regulations of the University (RESOLUTION No. 11/2010 - CEPE), also supervise students in Scientific Initiation (IC) projects and the Tutorial Education Program (PET-Mathematics). Moreover, they participate in the activities of the Brazilian Mathematics Olympiad (OBM), the Brazilian Public School Mathematics Olympiad (OBMEP), and the Espírito Santo Mathematics Olympiad (OCM). Many of the masters graduated from the program were IC or PET students, and the vast majority are former undergraduate Mathematics students at UFES. Thus, the program contributes to the high level of undergraduate students and selects some of these graduates for its student body. PPGMAT also participates in the Scientific Initiation and Master's Program (PICME). Some scholarship holders of this program have been accepted as special students, and it is expected that they will soon become regular students and complete their master's in Mathematics.

PPGMAT organizes, in conjunction with the Mathematics Department (DMAT) and PET, a series of colloquia with the participation of researchers from various important institutions in the country. Several undergraduate students attend these events, enriching their knowledge.

Teaching Internship:

The teaching internship program is an essential component of the professional development of students, required of all program participants. This internship provides support for teaching and monitoring activities in undergraduate and postgraduate courses, being satisfactorily completed.

Through the monitoring program, monitors receive professional training by participating in academic activities, which include preparing exercise lists and conducting practical classes, always under the supervision of a professor from the Mathematics Department (DMAT). This supervision can be performed by any faculty member of the department, regardless of their affiliation with the program. The courses involved are preferably those at the end of the undergraduate degree and the beginning of the master's degree.

Both supervisors and students recognize the importance of the teaching internship for professional training. The results of this experience have been extremely positive. Generally, the program's alumni perform well in the teaching aptitude test in faculty selection processes, indicating that the teaching internship is effectively preparing students for their future academic careers.
